Governments globally have introduced legislation with the objective of providing accommodations for persons with disabilities. The legislation paves the road to an equal opportunity and fully productive society, regardless of personal physical capabilities.
The Ontario Government implemented legislation, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) with the goal of having complete accessibility within the Province of Ontario by 2025. The legislation anticipates a staggered roll out of accessibility standards to ensure organizations are able to implement requirements in an orderly manner.
The proposed Accessible Information and Communications Standard under the AODA specifies requirements to prevent and remove barriers to persons with
disabilities when creating, procuring, conveying, receiving or distributing
information and communications to and from persons with disabilities in the Province of Ontario. This Standard is in the final stages of completion and is
expected to be implemented into law in 2010.
